Discovering the Diriyah Project: History, Vision & Transformation

Diriyah is located just 10 kilometres west of the Kingdom Tower in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s modern capital. Today, it carefully holds the restored remains of imposing mudbrick structures and landmarks that were part of this historic and powerful city, which is also the birthplace of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. 

It is in the At-Turaif district, a remarkable and reputed archaeological site which features royal palaces, residences, and defensive towers. It was constructed in the 18th century, and today it is seen as a rare and invaluable representation of the country’s rich early history, dating back more than 500 years. At-Turaif has also been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010. 

Now, Diriyah and the Royal district of At-Turaif are working together to both preserve the  18th-century architecture and heritage, and write the next chapter of Saudi Arabia’s story. 

The Diriyah Project

Diriyah. Also known as the “City of Earth”, it is the development of one of modern Saudi Arabia’s largest gigaprojects. This  $63.2 billion project aims to transform a 14-square-kilometre site into a global heritage, cultural, and lifestyle destination. 

In simple terms, Diriyah focuses on protecting the past and cultural roots while shaping the city for a brighter, better future. It is renowned by architectural experts as one of the largest and most complex projects in the world. 

Owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), overseen by Diriyah Company, and chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Diriyah project plays a crucial role in achieving the Vision 2030 goals, i.e., economic diversification. Vision 2030 primarily focuses on increasing the contribution of tourism to the national GDP from 3% to 10% by the end of the decade. 

The Unique Najdi Architecture 

At the heart of Diriyah’s attractiveness as an iconic cultural destination in Saudi lies the At-Turaif district. It is internationally renowned as an outstanding example of the unique Najdi mudbrick building, which represents a traditional architectural style native to the Najd region of central Saudi Arabia.

In both design and material integration, the Diriyah project is being dedicated to paying sympathetic homage to that architectural tradition. Besides this, they are also carefully taking advantage of the latest advancements in sustainable architecture and urban living. 

One of the main mandates of the project is to enhance and protect the legacy, rich culture, and heritage that the city proudly owns. This is why Diriyah has strict design guidelines that all architectural initiatives should comply with, especially paying very distinct homage to the local Najdi architecture. 

Key Destinations and Landmark Components 

Diriyah Art Futures 

An arts, research, and educational centre, jointly organised by the Diriyah project and the Kingdom’s Ministry of Culture. It is renowned as a global hub for interdisciplinary creative practice at the intersection of art, science, and technology.

Bujairi Terrace

Bujairi Terrace is an elegant Najdi-style dining district overlooking At-Turaif across Wadi Hanifah, featuring restaurants from global culinary traditions (including four linked to Michelin-starred establishments)

Bab Samhan Hotel 

Bab Samhan, a Marriott Luxury Collection hotel, opened in January 2025 as the first of 40 hotels planned to be opened in Diriyah. 

Diriyah Square 

Situated in the heart of the development, it will be one of the Kingdom’s largest shopping destinations, featuring more than 300 luxury and lifestyle brands and 100 restaurants and cafés, all designed in traditional Najdi style.

Diriyah Arena 

A 76,000-square-metre arena located in Diriyah, the “City of Earth,” with a seating capacity of 20,000, and expected to be the premier entertainment venue in the Middle East.

Royal Diriyah Opera House 

Scheduled to open in 2028 as part of the masterplan’s second phase, designed by Snøhetta in collaboration with Syn Architects, and described as the first venue of its kind in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. 

At-Turaif 

At-Turaif is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the historic heart of Diriyah, representing the original seat of the First Saudi State. Its well-preserved Najdi mudbrick architecture forms the cultural and historical foundation of Diriyah’s modern transformation.

The Najdi architecture in Diriyah is characterised by traditional mudbrick construction, featuring thick walls, simple geometric forms, and earthy tones. This style reflects the region’s climate and heritage, offering natural insulation and durability, and is a key element in preserving the cultural identity of Saudi Arabia’s historic heart.

The Vision 

The vision of Diriyah is to transform the historic birthplace of the Saudi Kingdom into a world-class cultural, heritage, and lifestyle destination that celebrates Saudi Arabia’s rich history and traditions while embracing modernity.

Diriyah presents significant investment opportunities within a business environment upheld by the highest governance standards, fostering job creation, boosting GDP, and securing its position as a world-class destination.

Once completed, Diriyah will boast an extensive array of museums, art galleries, over 40 luxury hotels, diverse restaurants, retail spaces, residential areas, educational facilities, and cultural centres. The development is projected to accommodate 100,000 residents, create 178,000 jobs, and welcome up to 50 million visitors annually.

The initial phase of the Diriyah masterplan is set for completion by 2030, perfectly timed with Saudi Vision 2030’s mission to strengthen the Kingdom’s international reputation.

While significant infrastructure work is already underway, the project is designed as a rolling development, gradually unveiling new assets and experiences rather than opening all at once. Opening Hours: Diriyah is generally open to visitors during daylight hours. However, opening times may vary for specific attractions, so it’s best to check in advance before planning your visit.

Best Time to Visit: The cooler months from October to March are ideal for visiting, offering more comfortable temperatures. To avoid crowds and maximise your experience, it’s recommended to arrive early in the day.
